PUREFOOD (2010-2014): PUREFOOD trained early-stage researchers in the socio-economic and spatial dynamics of (peri-)urban and regional foodscapes, focusing on sustainable food supply chains, public sector food procurement, and (peri-) urban food strategies.

FoodSAMSA (2021-2024): The project aimed to address malnutrition in all its forms, including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, unhealthy diets and obesity, by assessing its determinants and by exploring interventions at the macro (policy), the meso (community) and the micro (interpersonal) level.

NMNAP II: The second National Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan (NMNAP II) has been developed to guide implementation of nutrition activities for the period of five years i.e. 2021/22 – 2025/26. NMNAP II is an evidence-based five-year strategic action plan that seeks to address malnutrition in all its forms and for all ages and including people with special needs in Tanzania Mainland.

The HumMilk Study (2025- Present): Aims to analyse breastmilk nutrient and contaminant levels before and during storage in Norwegian milk banks, identifying factors affecting composition to improve quality monitoring and safeguard vulnerable infants.
MINIMat trial (follow-up) (2015-2016): Prenatal nutrition and health of children and grandchildren – examining whether improved pregnancy nutrition can reduce the trans-generational effects of the 1974 Bangladesh famine.
The Eat-Addis Study (2017-2021): The aim of this study was to understand the quality of diet being consumed among families in Addis Ababa, and to what extent social stratification and perceptions of availability and affordability affect healthy food consumption.

Hungry Cities Partnership
(2018-2019, 2023-Present): An international network focusing on the links between rapid urbanization, urban food systems, and migration in the Global South, aiming to promote sustainable cities and food security through research, training, and advocacy.
The GCRF Centre for Sustainable, Healthy and Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods (SHLC) (2019-2021): It was an international consortium of nine research partners aiming to strengthen capacity to address urban, health and education challenges in neighbourhoods across fast-growing cities in Africa and Asia.
South Africa Urban Food and Farming Trust: Works through food and farming to strengthen South Africa’s urban communities and the ecosystems that sustain them.
Agrihub Initiative (2022- Present): Addresses the challenges of marginalised urban communities by introducing key enabling infrastructure, training programs, extension services, agricultural inputs and market access to increase the resilience of existing informal urban micro-farms and food gardens.
Oranjezicht City Farm (2012- Present): OZCF offers diverse educational programs and innovative urban farming initiatives in South Africa, including volunteer schemes, composting, food forestry, and community events.

The Food Environment Actions for the Promotion of Health Cluster of Research Excellence (FE4H CoRE) is a collaborative initiative dedicated to addressing the critical role of food environments in shaping health outcomes for both individuals and the planet.
We recognize the systemic drivers behind the triple burden of malnutrition and work to advance the study, policy, and governance of food environments through innovative, cross-disciplinary approaches.
